Cue

From his early work in Los Angeles with Gerald Wilson, Buddy Collette, and Chico Hamilton through his experiences with Charles Mingus and John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy developed into one of the most intensely personal soloists in all of jazz. Equally accomplished on alto saxophone, flute, and bass clarinet, he could in one performance summon up the past, summarize the present, and envision the future of jazz. Here, in the final volume recorded in 1961 concert (the others are OJCCD-413-2 and 414-2), Dolphy explores on bass clarinet the Miles Davis revision of Benny Carter's "When Lights Are Low." On alto he plays Dizzy Gillespie's "Woody'n You" and a loving three-part exposition of the blues that were at the core of Dolphy's musical being.
