Группа образовалась в 1968 году вокруг барабанщика "Searchers" Криса Куртиса. Альбомы "The Book Of Taliesyn" and "Deep Purple" содержали неплохие композиции типа "Kentucky Woman", "River Deep - Mountain High" и "April". Ортодоксальный преемник этого альбома "Deep purple in rock" сделал группу ведущей хард-роковой командой. Соединение звучания органа Лорда и гитары Блэкмора, дополненное мощным вокалом Гиллана, создают "фирменный" саунд "Deep Purple".
