В 1961 году, когда Элвис Пресли оказался во Флориде, его увидел местный 11-летний паренек по имени Том Петти. Вдохновленный творчеством короля рок-н-ролла, мальчишка сразу же после этого взялся за гитару и уже с тех пор с ней не расставался. Когда Петти выгнали из школы, он наконец-то занялся полезным делом и сколотил свою первую команду под названием "Sundowners".
После серии кадровых перестановок и смены нескольких вывесок группа обрела имя "Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers", контракт с лейблом "MCA Records" и классический состав: Бенмонт Тенч (р. 7 сентября 1953; клавишные), Майк Кэмпбелл (р. 1 февраля 1950; гитара), Рон Блэйр (р. 16 сентября 1948; бас), Стэн Линч (р. 21 мая 1955; ударные) и Том Петти (р. 20 октября 1953; вокал, гитара).
Данная конфигурация произвела на свет четыре альбома, в том числе и наиболее восхваляемый критиками "Damn the torpedoes".
