После смерти отца и исчезновения матери, воспитанием Уилли и его сестры занимались бабушка и дедушка, приветствовавшие увлечение внуков музыкой.
Уилли выбрал гитару и в семь лет написал свою первую песню, Бобби играла на фортепиано. Первой группой Нелсона стала Raychecks, позже они с Бобби присоединились к ансамблю скрипача Бада Флетчера и очень скоро Уилли выдвинулся на роль фронтмена.
